A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
