British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
