The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
