Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
