Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
